Carnoustie Golf Links Overview

Many golfers consider the Championship Course at Carnoustie the most difficult test of championship golf in the world.  Carnoustie earned the nickname “Car-nasty” because it is so challenging,

The Championship Course has hosted eight Open Championships with a list of winners that includes legends such as Ben Hogan, Tom Watson, and Gary Player. Carnoustie has also hosted two Women’s Open’s and two Seniors Opens making it one of the very few to have done so in the UK. The Championship Course was voted The Best Golf Course in the World in 2019.

Carnoustie’s other contributions include being the first to use white and red flags on the courses.  The course and the town also proudly boast the first and oldest ladies’ club in the world, keeping true to its long-standing value of inclusivity.

Carnoustie’s history extends beyond just the players who have walked the Championship links. Many golf clubs in the United States can trace a direct line to Carnoustie through the contribution of these immigrants from Scotland, establishing Carnoustie as the ancestral home of American golf.

Black Sheep Review

Carnoustie’s reputation as “car-nasty” is well deserved!  France’s Jean Van de Velde certainly found that out in the 1999 British Open.  The one challenge with this course is access. Advance planning is important if you wish to play Carnoustie. This course is very popular with golf tours because it is on the Open ROTA circuit.  Check out our Open Venue tour If your desire is to tackle the Open courses,
