Overview

Forget leisurely lochs and quaint villages, this is a call to arms for golfing conquistadors! The East Coast Extravaganza is your odyssey, your quest to vanquish the top  legendary links from Royal Dornoch in the northern Highlands to North Berwick on the picturesque East Lothian coast.  Imagine yourself battling the wind at Carnoustie, carving your swing into the emerald tapestry of Cruden Bay, and feeling the ghosts of champions whisper on the hallowed turf of St Andrews.  Admittedly, this is a fantasy trip when time isn’t an issue and the body is still young enough to withstand thirteen rounds of golf in eleven days!

This tour charts the most efficient path to every east coast golf haven with a plan so meticulous that no drive takes longer than 90 minutes. This is a no-frills, all-thrills expedition for the golfer who bleeds birdies and lives for the roar of the crowd (even if it’s just your own internal cheer).

This extravaganza begins in Dornoch, a charming village nestled in the Northern Highlands  and home to the world renowned Royal Dornoch.  From Dornoch, you’ll begin your trek southward through the cities of Inverness, Aberdeen, St. Andrews and ultimately, Edinburgh.  On this journey, you’ll experience some of the best links golf Scotland has to offer on both classics and hidden gems.  At each stop along the way, you’ll be pampered in 5-star luxurious accommodations, taste delectable local cuisine in exquisite settings and experience thrilling adventures against the backdrop of majestic landscapes.

If your travel timeline doesn’t align with the available tee times at the uber popular St. Andrews Old Course or Muirfield, both of which are typically booked out over a year in advance, do not fear!  We developed backup plans for both on outstanding courses that will challenge even the best players.  Remember, this itinerary is your canvas, not a cage.  Our Black Sheep Concierges are master crafters, ready to tailor it to your every desire.  Thirteen rounds feel like a marathon? No worries! Chop down a 36-hole day and store it away for your next trip to this golfing mecca.

Day 2: Golf the Highland Jewel

Make sure you eat a good breakfast because you have a big day of golf ahead! In the morning, you’ll walk over to the Donald Ross masterpiece, Royal Dornoch which hugs the rugged coastline along the windswept dunes of the Dornoch Firth. Don’t get too caught mesmerized by this natural links wonder or this challenging links course will eat you alive!

In the afternoon, you’ll continue the day’s culinary adventures with an unforgettable whiskey tasting experience at Glenmorangie, one of the most famous distilleries in the world. Hopefully you left some room for dinner as a number of the town’s culinary treasures await! If seafood is your desire, might we suggest Luigi.

Day 3: A James Braid Classic and down to Inverness

In the morning, your private shuttle will escort you a few miles north for a round at Brora, often recognised as being one of James Braid’s finest pieces of work. Brora is also home to Dunrobin Castle, a beautiful castle overlooking the Moray Firth that could have come straight from a Disney film! You should have time for a couple pictures before the sun sets on this glorious day.

In the evening, you head down to Inverness where you will arrive at the 5-Star Ness Walk Hotel, your luxurious accommodations. Nestled on the leafy banks of the River Ness, Ness Walk allows you to experience a secluded atmosphere in the heart of the vibrant city center.

Day 4: Challenge a star on the rise!

Today you’ll tackle the “modern” Cabot Highlands (previously known as Castle Stuart) which has quickly become recognized as one of the best links courses in Scotland and ranks 60th on Golf Digest’s list of best courses in the world.

Inverness is famed for its food and drink but unfortunately, you’ll have to choose since you’re only in town for one evening. Depending on your mood, two options stand out. If comfort food is your desire, Castle Tavern might hit the spot with its delicious food and an ever changing collection of local ales. The very popular Rocpool is a great option if fine dining is your preference.

Day 5: An often overlooked Masterpiece

Today you’ll begin your journey over to Aberdeen but on the way, you get a great opportunity to play an often overlooked Old Tom Morris masterpiece, the Old Course at Moray Golf Club. Situated along the breathtaking Moray coast in northern Scotland, Moray Golf Club is a true gem among the nation’s many revered courses with the signature hole #18 often considered one of the finest finishing holes in golf. Because it’s off the beaten path, many miss this great opportunity but for our purposes, this is perfectly located as it breaks up the journey to Aberdeen.

As you arrive into Aberdeen, you’ll settle in for four nights at another luxurious 5-star hotel, The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa. A perfect place to relax, unwind and even get a massage at their world-class spa.

Tonight, check out the vibrant Aberdeen food scene. Being located near to the sea and the bountiful Highlands, it’s no surprise Scotland’s third largest city is packed with great produce. If seafood is your desire, you might try Moonfish Cafe, a regular in the Michelin Guide

Day 6: Two unforgettable golf experiences!

The day begins at Cruden Bay, a perennial favorite on our tours. This Old Tom Morris design ranks 53rd in Golf Digest list of best world golf courses. Cruden Bay creates unique challenges that demand power, placement and fine judgment. No. 14’s “bathtub green” and the blind par 3 15th are no exceptions. The views, the golf and hospitality…there’s nothing not to love about Cruden Bay!

No time to catch your breath as the afternoon doesn’t get any easier with historic Royal Aberdeen waiting in the wings. With its first tee set right alongside the clubhouse windows, you’ll get a good view of the challenge ahead as you grab a bit between rounds. The first nine holes on this traditional out and back layout rank among the best in the world. As you turn for home on #10, you’ll face a new challenge, wind!

Tonight I suggest relaxing in your hotel and dining in the hotel’s Conservatory Restaurant with its innovative menu featuring locally sourced foods and its extensive wine list.

Day 7: St. Andrews awaits but first…

…but first, you’ll enjoy your trip down to the town of St. Andrews with two detours. First, a must see on the East coast is the Dunnottar Castle just south of Aberdeen. This is one of the most photographed places in all of Scotland.

Next on the journey, you’ll play the 21st oldest course in the world, Panmure Golf Club. Panmure has the unique distinction of being touched by both of the design legends, Old Tom Morris and James Braid. The course combines the best elements of links and heathland, with tight fairways, challenging carries and undulating greens. Even better, it’s perfectly situated to split our drive down to St. Andrews.

There are many fantastic hotel options in St. Andrews but since this tour is designed for the hard core golfer, The Old Course Hotel is the obvious choice. Set alongside the iconic 17th hole of The Old Course, you’ll experience Scottish hospitality at its best in the heart of a golfers paradise. It’s not unusual to bump into a golfing legend as I did my first time there when I noticed I was having breakfast next to Gary Player.

St. Andrews too is a foodie town (notice a trend?). There are so many great options but certainly Forgan’s should be on your list. This is a St Andrews institution and a favorite among locals, students and tourists alike.

Day 8: Play a classic, either way!

Even if you’re not a breakfast person, PLEASE head up to the top floor of the hotel and partake, if only for the views (although the breakfast is wonderful too!).

If you’ve planned this tour well in advance, a tee time at St. Andrews is not impossible. What can I tell you that you don’t already know about this course? It’s a classic no doubt but in my opinion, it’s recently taken on a life of its own and has overshadowed so many other great courses. If an advanced tee time wasn’t possible, there are many other options available and we’ll exploit them all. But more importantly, we’ll have an amazing backup plan awaiting…Carnoustie (or car-nastie as it’s known to those who’ve played it!). Either way, you’re in for an amazing day of golf.

Another “don’t miss” dining option in St. Andrews is The Seafood Ristorante, perhaps St Andrews’ most dramatic and picturesque place to eat. Located on the edge of a high bank with the sea foaming just below, the restaurant affords spectacular views of the Scottish coastline and as you would expect, the seafood is amazing!

Day 9: Two of the top “newer” links experiences, then off the Lothian Coast!

Warning, big golf day ahead!

After breakfast, you’ll play what is often travelers favorite Scotland golf experience, Kingsbarns. Every hole on this “newer” championship-standard course offers inspiring views of the North Sea. This combined with a combination of playability, classic links turf and staff dedicated to personal service make this an experience you will never forget. It’s one of my two personal favorites, even with the devil dog stealing my hole-in-one on the par 3 8th (here are the painful details for those so inclined).

Dumbarnie Links is on the docket for your afternoon round. This may be one of the newer courses in Scotland but it’s quickly being recognized as one of the best, already ranking 24th in the list of best Scotland courses. Another challenging course with sweeping views from almost every hole, this is one you don’t want to miss.

After golf, load your tired bones into your private coach and settle in for a short drive down to Gullane where you will settle in at your 5-Star hotel, The Bonnie Badger.

Day 10: One of my favorite Courses in Scotland!

Your first course on the lovely Lothian Coast will be one of the oldests clubs in the world and one of my personal favorites…North Berwick. The course is set on a narrow strip of land between the Firth of Forth and the town of North Berwick. The fairways are narrow and undulating, and the greens are small and well-protected. The wind can be a major factor, and the course is known to be challenging for even the best golfers.

What makes this course so special is its quirkiness which offers some truly unique challenges like hitting over a stone wall that protects the 13th green. The course is also known for the par 3 15th hole, Redan, which has the reputation of being the most copied hole in the world.

Day 10: The Muirfield Experience!

Your last experience on this tour is probably the most unique. Not only is Muirfield one of the most iconic clubs in Scotland, a 16-time host of The Open and home to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, it’s also a club steeped in tradition. This is a full day event beginning with a traditional morning four ball round on its famed links. It’s legendary lunch that follows is a not-to-be-missed experience. This formal (jacket & tie) affair in its historic clubhouse will make you feel you just stepped into a Harry Potter scene! The experience continues in the afternoon where you will play a second round of golf in an alternate shot format, the only format used by the members of the club.

It’s a long day of golf concluding a very long tour so you’re excused if room service is the dining choice this evening after your trip over to Edinburgh for the final evening.

Day 10: The Journey Ends but the Memories Begin!

On this final morning, your tour driver will make sure all departure schedules are met as you head to your next destination. While it’s always hard to leave such a magical place like the Scotland coast, the memories you’ll have from this amazing experience will last a lifetime!
