Overview

Imagine this: a sleek helicopter whisking you across emerald landscapes, as you take in breathtaking vistas on your way to Scotland’s golfing jewels. This isn’t just a golf tour, it’s a pilgrimage across golfing history, landing you on every Open Championship ground in Scotland. You’ll conquer Troon’s “Postage Stamp,” feel the whispers of champions at Muirfield, and battle the windswept majesty of Carnoustie. But your adventures reach beyond Open venues. Gleneagles beckons with its regal courses and world-class hospitality, while hidden gems like Machrihanish seduce with their wild beauty. Each day brings a new challenge, a new landscape to paint with your swing, but it’s more than just birdies and bogeys. This is your chance to discover why Scotland is the undisputed home of golf, a green symphony waiting to be played.

Your epic voyage begins where it all started – the “home of golf”, St. Andrews Old Course. From there, conquer all six Open Championship icons, etching your name into the fabric of golfing history. But it’s beyond these hallowed grounds that Scotland’s secrets beckon. Our silver chariot will lift you away to Gleneagles, “the Riviera of the North,” where manicured greens bask in sun-dappled splendor. Then, prepare to be humbled by Machrihanish, a windswept symphony of dunes and sea, where nature whispers tales of untamed beauty.

At each stop on this tour, you’ll be ensconced in luxurious 5-star accommodations, where exquisite hospitality and delectable local cuisine await your discerning palate. Savor Andrew Fairlie’s two-Michelin masterpieces at Gleneagles, unlock the secrets of Scotland’s elixir with a whiskey aficionado, or enjoy a toast from a mountain top as you watch the sunset and take in the panoramic views over The River Tay and Fife knowing you just tamed the beast: Carnoustie!

This journey is about more than birdies and bogeys, it’s about discovering the soul of Scotland: the courses that made it famous and the people & culture that keep you coming back!

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to the Home of Golf!

After landing in Edinburgh airport, your private coach will escort you up to the “home of golf”, St. Andrews. There are many fantastic hotel options in St. Andrews but for this tour, The Old Course Hotel is the obvious choice. Set alongside the iconic 17th hole of The Old Course, you’ll experience Scottish hospitality at its best in the heart of a golfers paradise. It’s not unusual to bump into a golfing legend as I did my first time there when I noticed I was having breakfast next to Gary Player.

You’ll begin the evening with welcome cocktails and an informal tour briefing from your Black Sheep Golf Tour Concierge. There are so many great options in this “foodie” town but certainly Forgan’s should be on your list. This is a St Andrews institution and a favorite among locals, students and tourists alike

Day 2: Golf the Crown Jewel of Scotland

Even if you’re not a breakfast person, PLEASE head up to the top floor of the hotel and partake, if only for the views (although the breakfast is wonderful too!).

St. Andrews Old Course…What can I tell you about playing this course where golf began? Unfortunately words don’t capture the outer body experience of hitting your first tee shot on #1 as you become part of golf’s history, or staring at the the corner of the old course hotel on the 17th tee deciding how much of the hotel you want to hit over as you try to conquer the famous road hole, or walking over Swilcan Burn imagining that the crowds walking on the road along the 18th fairway are there to see you play your finishing hole. Today is about you experiencing this masterpiece and creating your own lasting memories!

My guess is you’ll want to savor the St. Andrews experience for as long as possible. The best way to do that is to head up to 18, the rooftop restaurant and bar on top of the Rusacks Hotel with its unrivaled views across St Andrews’ Old Course.

Dinner at Rusacks is a great choice. However, another “don’t miss” dining option on your final night in St. Andrews is The Seafood Ristorante, perhaps St Andrews’ most dramatic and picturesque place to eat. Located on the edge of a high bank with the sea foaming just below, the restaurant affords spectacular views of the Scottish coastline and as you would expect, the seafood is amazing!

Day 3: A “Nasty” day

Actually, it’s a great day as another Open venue course is on the docket. This home to eight Open Championships has devoured some of the world’s best golfers (remember Jean van de Velde 18th in 1999…ouch!) so don’t be surprised if you’re the next person to embrace its well earned nickname “Car-nasty”.

The day’s drama will soon be forgotten as your private helicopter experience begins, and what a start it will be! Your first stop on this afternoon’s adventure is a remote hilltop with panoramic views over The River Tay, Perthshire, Angus, and Fife. Here you will taste delicious local and seasonal food lovingly prepared by a professional chef. This immersive food and wine experience is an experience to remember!

From here, your flying coach will take you to the famous Gleneagles resort where you will swoop down from the sky for a dramatic approach to the hotel’s front lawns. After your earlier feast, perhaps a drink at the bar is a fitting ending to this glorious day.

Day 4: A Gleneagles day to remember!

Begin this memorable day with a choice from one of Gleneagles three championship golf courses. The King’s Course, a Braid-designed masterpiece and ‘inland links’ classic; The Queen’s Course, one of the finest par-68 heathland golf courses in the UK; or the contemporary Nicklaus-designed PGA Centenary Course. Each of these three courses offer a world-class golfing experience to a broad spectrum of enthusiasts, from novices through to the finest players in the world.

It’s time to pamper yourself in the afternoon and there’s no better way to do so than with a massage in one of the finest spas in Scotland.

Tonight you will experience a very special culinary treat at the only 2 Michelin star restaurant in Scotland, Restaurant Andrew Fairlie. Expect an indulgent evening in a relaxed and comfortable environment where thoughtful and attentive service is only exceeded by the exquisite cuisine.

Day 5: Two gems on Ayrshire’s Kintyre Peninsula

Day two of your break from the Open venue classics.  Today we take full advantage of our wings and whisk you away over the Firth of Clyde to the southern tip of the remote Kintyre peninsula. Two unbelievable courses await for your day’s adventure.  The morning’s round will be Machrihanish Dunes, often called “The World’s Most Natural Course”.  Machrihanish Dunes is another not-to-be-missed David McLay Kidd masterpiece.  Just as he did with Bandon Dunes, Kidd designed each hole around the natural terrain of this pristine coastal environment.

Lunch at the Blacksheep Pub for sure!  Yes, of course we like the name…but it’s the warmth of its hearth and the honest goodness of its food we love the most. Share laughter with locals, tales traded over hearty plates, and feel the genuine spirit of Kintyre seep into your bones.

After lunch, you have the pleasure of playing yet another Machrihanish links treasure, Machrihanish Golf Club. This Old Tom Morris course offers golfers an extraordinary experience with each hole presenting breathtaking vistas overlooking Machrihanish Bay.  Jack Nicklaus called the first hole of Machrihanish’s Championship Course “the best opening hole of golf in the world.”

As shadows lengthen, you’ll bid farewell to this natural paradise, but fear not, for your silver chariot is ready to take you to the grandeur of the Turnberry Hotel. Sink into its timeless elegance, a fitting reward for your day’s conquests.

After a long day, Dinner in the unforgettable Duel in the Sun restaurant would be a good choice for this evening.  Named after the famous battle between Tom Watson & Jack Nicklaus at the 1977 Open, it overlooks both the opening and closing holes of both courses.

Day 6: The Turnberry Day

After your English breakfast, it’s time to challenge the Turnberry Ailsa Course. This course was designed by the legendary Charles Blair Macdonald and noted as a masterpiece of strategic bunkering, undulating greens, and breathtaking vistas. This classic course is also the famous duel between Jack Nichlaus and Tom Watson in the 1977 Open Championship.

Dinner this evening is a special treat as you will have a VIP private dining experience at The Chef’s Table in 1906. This private dining experience allows unrivaled access to a live, theatrical, culinary performance featuring Turnberry’s brigade of talented chefs.

Enjoy a relaxing morning. Perhaps a massage in Turnberry’s world class spa. If your game needs a little work, head down to the Turnberry Golf Academy. This world class practice facilities and cutting edge technology is sure to help you work out a few kinks in the swing!

After a short coach ride north along the Ayrshire coast, your afternoon’s adventure is Royal Troon, where the 2024 Open Championship will etch its legend into history. Stand where the world’s best have stood, tee up on the iconic “postage stamp” and “Railway” holes and test your skills against the world’s best. But Royal Troon is more than just a challenge, it’s a breathtaking beauty. Picture rugged cliffs guarding emerald fairways. This Ayrshire masterpiece is a fitting crescendo to your Ayrshire journey.

Since you’re in Troon, Scotts in Troon Harbor is a great dining option. From bar nibbles and oysters to delicious sharing platters, freshly-landed lobster to prime Scotch steaks, their menus are sure to satisfy even the most discerning of tastes.

Through The Prestwick Experience, you become a member of the club for the day and are encouraged to take full advantage of the services they have to offer including use of the Smoke Room (the main Lounge) and having a formal lunch at the long table in the Dining Room (similar to Muirfield). You are allowed full access to the clubhouse to enjoy and absorb the hospitality and storied history of this great club.

Tonight you become a whiskey aficionado as your Whiskey Guru host unlocks the secrets of Scotland’s elixir, sharing stories woven from barley and peat. Savor rare treasures, each sip a brushstroke on your palate, painting landscapes of smoke and honey.  A private hosted dinner will follow led by one of the region’s top local chefs.

Day 9: The Muirfield Experience

Bid farewell to Ayrshire on wings of silver, your helicopter whisking you across the Firth of Forth to East Lothian’s picturesque shores. Here, amidst rolling hills and emerald fairways, your final Open Championship challenge awaits: Muirfield.

This hallowed ground, sixteen times host to The Open and home to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, is a pilgrimage for true golf aficionados. Step onto its links, and tradition whispers at your heels.

Your day unfolds with a four-ball match. Then, step into the historic clubhouse for a legendary lunch – a not-to-be-missed formal affair (jacket and tie, of course!) that feels like stepping straight into a Harry Potter scene.

But the afternoon holds a unique treat: a second round of golf in the members-only alternate shot format – and don’t ask if you can play a second four-ball match…

By day’s end, after conquering Muirfield’s majestic fairways, a gentle fatigue may settle in. Room service tonight is a perfectly acceptable indulgence.  Let this day at Muirfield be the grand finale of your Ayrshire journey, a memorable echo of tradition, camaraderie, and the enduring legacy of The Open Championship.
